Orbit - 360° Projector

Product Design Agency Alloy created Orbit, the interactive projector as a cvoncept project to encourage children to put down their phones and be more social

Enabling more family interactions through play, education and physical activities

The 21st century has been an era of colossal technological advances, with arguably the biggest life changing innovation being the smart phone. It has transformed our lives entirely; we have become totally reliant on them to the point of addiction. And therein lies the issue. There is widespread concern about the amount of time children spend staring at screens – with many worried about the negative impacts mobile devices might have on health, well-being and the detrimental impact on the time family members spend together.

ORBIT is an interactive 360° ultra-short throw projector that looks to address this growing concern by encouraging families to put their mobile devices down and spend time together. Enabling more family interactions through play, educational and physical activities.

Alloy designed concept project Orbit in the aim to create a more sustainable future

The idea is simple; put your smart phone down on top of the unit to bring it to life. Then, using it’s 4 ultra-short throw projectors, it projects a 360° interactive touch interface on to any surface. This turns any smart phone into a central focus for family fun and learning wherever you might want it.

Infra-red sensors around the device detect when a user touches anywhere on the projection, turning any surface into an interactive interface. This allows ORBIT to be used anywhere with a flat surface.

Industrial design company Alloy created Orbit to take second hand phones out of circulations and give them a secondary sustainable use. This was the design studios primary aim

Orbit centers around 4 main use cases; education, cooking, exercise, and family conversation. The 360° projections help to create a collaborative learning environment, useful kitchen worktop, active exercise floor space and opens up the opportunity for video conversations from the comfort of your sofa. The team went through a range of design services inorder to execute the final concept outcome.
