Arlo - Smart Baby Monitor

ARLO Smart Baby Monitor was designed by Alloy, the Surrey based design company in order to create a freindlier more intuative baby monitor design

Brand extension into smart baby monitoring

Building on our long term relationship with global consumer electronics brand NETGEAR, Alloy was selected as their preferred partner to help extend their market leading smart home security brand Arlo, into the baby monitoring space.

With an exciting brief to design the best baby monitoring device the market has ever seen, Alloy used its experience-led design approach to identify and deliver on key innovation opportunities for the product identity, user experience and product functionality, which in-turn would leverage NETGEAR’s formidable technical capabilities and leadership position within home monitoring cameras.

Alloy’s early design-led insight work identified many potential opportunities for the new product, which included;

  • Disguising a potentially intrusive technology product within the nursery environment by making it blend with its surroundings

  • Achieving the best view of the baby (or child) at all times, in particular being able to clearly see the baby in the crib and not just glimpses through the crib bars

  • Increasing the life span of the product beyond just the baby stage, to give consumers more return on initial investment

  • Removing the parental fear of the child’s access to cables

Product Design Consultancy Alloy created a friendlier baby monitor design to appeal to a larger target audience of users

Translating these opportunities into product benefits directly led to the design of a highly versatile table and wall mount accessory, which provides the ability to capture the best view of the child whatever the users room or furniture set-up. This benefit was further enhanced by the inclusion of an integrated rechargeable battery solution that provides total placement freedom and removes concerns with the child accessing product cables.

Finally the characterisation of the camera via interchangeable skins allows the camera to be dressed up as a range of cute animals, addresses the opportunity to harmonise the product to its surrounding environment and ensures the technology is far more in keeping with a babies room than a normal monitoring camera.

The interchangeable skins approach also allows for a more neutral non-nursery aesthetic when the device is ‘naked’, making it easy to repurpose to more traditional home monitoring opportunities and extending the useful life expectancy of the product beyond just baby monitoring.
